Web 2.0

Technological advance and cultural change has lead to what is described as Web 2.0. Web 2.0 is characterized by a number of factors. Here is a clever video that describes the evolution of the web. Web 2.0 is characterized by a few key elements: user created content, web applications - that is, web sites that act like desktop applications. Innovative uses of techologies, such as Ajax provide the technical basis of Web 2.0

User Created Content

Sites such has Youtube, Flickr and Blogger allow ordinary people to publish video, photographs, and create their own blogs (online journals), Wikis are another example of user created content.

Web Applications

Web Applications allow users to do things on the Web (word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, calendars), the used to be done exclusively by desktop applications. One example of a web application is Google Docs.

Web 2.0 Technologies

Many Web 2.0 applications use Ajax. Ajax itself is not a "new" technologies, but rather is the use of existing web technologies in a way to provide richly interactive web pages.
